Washington Teacher Reciprocity Agreements

October 13, 2021

The National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) was established to promote cooperation and communication among educators in different states and to facilitate mobility and licensing between states. NASDTEC formed the Interstate Agreement to facilitate this movement. As of 2011, the only states not participating in the Interstate Agreement are Iowa and Minnesota. A person licensed or certified in one Member State may acquire his licence in another State as long as both States participate in the agreement. Some states have their own specific requirements that must be met, such as additional course work, tests, or teaching experience, but the agreement makes things much easier. The way the agreement works is that each state (as well as the District of Columbia, the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico, and even some Canadian provinces) explains from which states it accepts teachers` licenses or certificates and what additional requirements may be required. You can even specify the types of certificates they accept (teachers, administrators, etc.). These agreements do not necessarily go one way or the other. Just because Georgia accepts Certification from Connecticut, for example, doesn`t mean Connecticut accepts Certification from Georgia.

Connecticut is expected to declare in its agreement that it accepts Georgia`s certification. Certifications for secondary school teachers vary greatly depending on the subject and grade level you want to teach. You must pass the minimum certification exams as well as a confirmatory exam specific to the subject you wish to teach. For example, if you want to teach biology at the high school level, you must take the minimum certification exams and a biology confirmation exam through the National Science Teachers Association. Other ways are designed for lateral participants and individuals to teach full-time. Please note that enrollment in an alternative program is only done through another approved itinerary provider. Read on to learn more about some of the alternatives to teacher certification in Washington. Answer: The NASDTEC Interstate Agreement is a set of agreements between different states that recognize which elements of one state`s teacher licensing process are equivalent to those of another. .
